CADfix delivers native CATIA files
TranscenData has announced the launch of a new module for CADfix, the leading CAD data interoperability tool. This addition further extends support and compatibility with CATIA files with the release of a native CATIA export capability.
This CATIA export capability for CADfix provides support for CATIA version 4 files, and covers a comprehensive range of geometrical and topological model entities, providing a valid model file for immediate import and use within CATIA.
Andy Chinn, Applications Manager at TranscenData Europe comments: "CADfix has established itself as an indispensable tool for rapid processing of CAD formats such as IGES, STEP, Parasolid and ACIS, which, despite being recognised standards, rarely read smoothly into 3D applications. To this, we have added the ability to interface with a significant proportion of CAD files and systems directly with new native import and export modules. The widespread use of the software means that a reliable CATIA export tool is very much in demand for CADfix."
Without a native export option the CATIA user has to rely on receiving data in a standard format such as IGES or STEP. This adds an additional translation process that can introduce incompatibilities, corruptions, misinterpretations and errors. The IGES route into CATIA does not support solid model representations and often the task of turning a surface model into a solid can be time consuming or virtually impossible depending on the complexity of the data. STEP translations can be more effective because solid model definitions are supported, but this functionality requires the purchase of an additional CATIA module and so it is not always available to the end user.CATIA dominates the high-end CAD market, especially in the automotive and aerospace industries, and suppliers to major OEMs are regularly asked to deliver data to their customers in native format. The supplier often has no option but invest in the native CAD system of the customer, which can prove costly if they have multiple customers using different systems.
The release of native CATIA export will be beneficial to anyone who needs to meet customer demands for supplying quality native model data, but who does not work with, or have access to, a CATIA installation.
"Users of CAD data across the engineering supply chain will benefit immensely from a direct link to CATIA files," says Chinn. "Suppliers will no longer have to make do with inadequate translation tools which often leads to days of data rework before they can begin processing the models. With CATIA-enabled CADfix users can eliminate the wasted effort."
